After pulling the wraps off the little Kwid, Renault seem to have raked in quite a lot of praise, given the promising first-impressions by the media. At a starting price of Rs 2.57 lakh for the ‘STD’ version, the brand seems to have learnt the trick of the trade as far as the Indian buyer’s intent is concerned.
With its butch, miniature crossover-like stance and the plastic cladding around, the Kwid comes across as a relatively attractive car with the appeal of an SUV – something the Indian folks will take to in an assertive manner. Under the bonnet sits a 799cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 53.2bhp and 72Nm of torque. Linked to the motor is a 5-speed gearbox, but going by the current trend of AMT’s, we expect to see an automatic version in the coming months. They’ve also managed to keep the weight down to a minimum of 660kgs, helping it achieve a frugal 25.17kpl, along with a remarkable power-to-weight ratio as well.
Renault have also come up with a simple three-bolt wheel design for the Kwid, so as to keep production costs within desired limits. And for those of you in search of moderate boot capacity, the Kwid boasts of a class-busting 300 litres. With the Hyundai Eon, Maruti Suzuki Alto and Datsun Go in sight, Renault certainly seems confident about its foray into the segment with what could possibly be a game-changer.

RXE: Rs 2.89 lakh
RXE (O): Rs 2.95 lakh
