Porsche has set a new Guinness World Record with the longest uninterrupted drift of an electric car on ice. Behind the wheel, Porsche Experience instructor Jens Richter drifted the Taycan GTS for an impressive 17.503 kilometers (132 laps) at the Porsche Arctic Center in Levi, Finland, surpassing the previous record of 14.809 kilometers.
The record attempt was not without challenges. “Under the extreme continuous load of the drifting Taycan, the ice track deteriorated faster than expected,” said Richter. The team aborted the first attempt after 11 kilometers but returned with a modified setup, using shorter spikes on the tires and taking advantage of colder temperatures as night fell. The second attempt proved successful, cementing the Taycan GTS’s performance credentials in extreme conditions.
Equipped with Michelin tires featuring one-millimeter spikes, the Taycan GTS maintained perfect control throughout the drift. “The Taycan has once again proven its sideways driving qualities,” Richter said. “And this time, even with all-wheel drive, it handled the conditions with remarkable precision.”
The official record was verified by Guinness adjudicator Carl Saville, who presented the certificate to Jens Richter and Christian Lehwald, Managing Director of the Porsche Arctic Center. The feat took place on a custom-designed drift circle, 59 meters in diameter, with a professional GPS system recording every detail of the journey, from throttle inputs to steering movements.
This new world record adds to the Taycan’s growing list of accolades, joining previous titles such as the record for the highest altitude change by an electric vehicle (5,573 meters) set by the Taycan Cross Turismo in 2023, and other performance milestones achieved by various Taycan models in the past few years.
With this latest achievement, the Porsche Taycan continues to demonstrate its exceptional performance and versatility, even under the most extreme conditions.
