Andrea Dovizioso took lead of the world championship by taking victory at Silverstone while title rival Marc Marquez retired with an engine failure. The Italian worked his way through from sixth on the grid to pass Valentino Rossi at Stowe with two laps to spare.

He held off Maverick Vinales to win by 0.114 seconds. Vinales picked the nine-time champ on the same lap as Dovizioso. Marquez was running third behind Rossi and Dovizioso when smoke poured from the back of his Honda on the Hangar Straight costing him the championship lead.

Behind the podium finishers, Cal Crutchlow came home to claim fourth on his LCR Honda having sat on the back of the lead pack for most part. Lorenzo held the best of the rest position although he did have to battle back past Johann Zarco when the Tech 3 Yamaha rider got ahead after dispatching Pedrosa.

Pedrosa ended up seventh with Scott Redding of Pramac Ducati, Alex Rins of Suzuki and Alvaro Bautista of Aspar Ducati rounding out the top 10. Pol Espargaro got home in 11th but he bizarrely crashed at Copse after the chequered flag.
