Reports in Germany suggested that a contract for Alonso to race for Williams in 2018 is almost a done deal. Discussions were said to be going on since before the summer break as the Spaniard believes in the potential and future of Williams with Paddy Lowe at the helm.

Despite Williams dropping down recently, they are already working hard on the 2018-spec car by correcting the fundamental design flaws. The engineers are reportedly working to reposition the rear axle and transmission supplied by Mercedes.

It would sync with Force India’s solution for the Mercedes engine and it resulted in their car being a better piece of engineering and of course a better performer. The Spanish double world champion won’t come cheap but this problem is sorted by Lawrence Stroll prepared to pay whatever the salary is.

Stroll put in an estimated €40 million into Williams to better his son Lance Stroll’s F1 career. It would provide Lance Stroll the best tutor any young driver could dream about. In return, it gives Alonso access to Mercedes power.

His ambitions to claim a third world title have become sort of unrealistic but he could take chances with Williams as they have the potential to be the best non-works team on the grid. Felipe Massa came out of retirement last year because Valterri Bottas was given the vacant Mercedes.
