Goes on sale later this year
BMW has officially unveiled the 2016 X1 crossover. While its predecessor resembled a tall wagon, the 2016 model features a more robust appearance that closely echoes the rest of the company’s SAVs. Notable highlights include a sportier front bumper and a prominent grille that is flanked by LED-infused headlights. The model also has plastic body cladding, a gently sloping roof and a tailgate-mounted spoiler.
Customers can also order Sport Line, xLine and M Sport styling packages. The latter features an aerodynamic body kit and 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels. The package also adds cloth/Alcantara sport seats, Aluminium Hexagon trim and matte blue accents – among other things.
Speaking of the interior, entry-level models feature cloth seats, Oxide Silver trim and high-gloss black accents. They also have air conditioning and a freestanding iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch display. Of course, there will countless options including Dakota leather seats and Fineline Stream or Oak Grain wood trim.
The 2016 X1 also boasts several technology upgrades including a newly optional heads-up display and a Driving Assistant Plus package that adds Active Cruise Control (with Stop & Go), Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Jam Assistant, Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking.
At launch, the model will be available with five different engines including:
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 150 PS (110 kW) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 190 PS (139 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel with 231 PS (170 kW) and 450 Nm (331 lb-ft) of torque
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol with 192 PS (141 kW) and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol with 231 PS (170 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque
They will eventually be joined by two entry-level variants that use a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. The X1 sDrive16d will produce 116 PS (85 kW), while the X1 sDrive18i develops 136 PS (100 kW).
Depending on which engine is selected, it can be paired to a new six-speed manual or a new eight-speed Steptronic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard but all-wheel drive is optional / standard on the higher-end variants.
The 2016 BMW X1 will go on sale in Germany in October, while a U.S. launch is scheduled for this fall.
