BMW Group has announced the launch of the new BMW X5, the world’s first vehicle to offer five different drivetrain technologies: battery electric, plug-in hybrid, petrol, diesel, and hydrogen fuel cell. The move reinforces BMW’s commitment to a technology-open approach and its ambition to lead the global transition to sustainable mobility.

Joachim Post, BMW AG Board Member for Development, unveiled the vehicle at an event in New York, stating, “By launching the new BMW X5 with a choice of five drive system variants, we are once again demonstrating our leading position as a technology pioneer.”

The centerpiece of this innovation is the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen, set to enter series production in 2028 following successful global pilot tests. Developed in collaboration with Toyota, the vehicle features BMW’s third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system — more compact, powerful, and efficient than ever.

BMW also introduced the HyMoS (Hydrogen Mobility at Scale) initiative, a collaborative effort with industry and institutional partners to accelerate hydrogen infrastructure development, starting with pilot ecosystems in Germany and France.

With flexible production capabilities and global demand in mind, BMW’s expanded powertrain portfolio aims to meet diverse customer needs while advancing global decarbonization efforts.
