Renault confirmed discussion between the French outfit and McLaren on a potential customer F1 engine supply deal for next year. McLaren is currently evaluating whether to commit to Honda for 2018 or break the partnership and opt for Renault.
Since Mercedes and Ferrari are direct supercar rivals in the automotive field, the chances of them supplying engine is next to nothing. At Spa McLaren faced a difficult situation over its engine choice with consultants Ilmor helping Honda to make the desperate gains that could be temporary.
Renault currently supplies engines for its works team, Red Bull and Toro Rosso, and is believed to have been unwilling to expand to a fourth team. This could allow for Toro Rosso switching to Honda if talks go positive but that seems unlikely.
At the Belgian Grand Prix, Renault F1 managing director Cyril Abiteboul admitted that talks between his outfit and McLaren had taken place but said a deal may not happen. Due to the restrictions in supplying more than three teams, this mooted association won’t come to light after all leaving McLaren to stick with Honda only.
