The duo emerged as the leaders after a wild opening to the Austrian Grand Prix and battled wheel-to-wheel for victory as Dovizioso prevailed by an unbelievable 0.176 s after a last corner tussle from the Spaniard.

Marquez kept the lead from pole but the straightline speed of Jorge Lorenzo was far superior. The Ducati rider overtook teammate Dovizioso at Turn 1 before passing Marquez on the next straight.

As Marquez battled Dovizioso on the opening lap, Lorenzo escaped up the order but when things settled, he was reeled in by both of them. On lap eight, Marquez was close enough to take the lead before making a mistake and got relegated to third by Dovizioso.

Lorenzo’s race pace faded away following his mistake in the same place and from there he stuck within a couple of tenths to Marquez but it was not enough. He was quickly dispossessed by  his Italian teammate.

Marquez had Dovizioso always on his toes as he slipstreamed past on the main straight with seven laps to go. They traded places multiple times but Marquez couldn’t manage to make a move stick.

With Dovizioso often blocking Marquez from overtaking at Turn 7, tension rose but in the last few minutes the battle was down to the very final corner of the final lap. Marquez tried something spectacular but couldn’t get a clean exit and handed over the victory to the Ducati rider. After making way through the pack, Dani Pedrosa of Honda completed third.
